7 POSSIBLE CAUSES FOR YOUR BRITTLE HAIR

We are breaking down 7 possible causes for your brittle hair!

1. You’re not getting enough moisture in

This is an obvious one, and we say it all the time, but moisture is the number 1 most important factor as far as healthy hair is concerned. If you are not getting adequate moisture from inside and out this will without a doubt lead to dry brittle hair.

2. You’re going too long between washdays

Water is the number one most effective way to moisturise your hair and drenching your hair with it on your wash day followed by water-based conditioners and leave-in of spritzed between washdays can only go so far! So make sure you’re not depriving your hair of this important step. Every 7-10 days is ideal!

3. You’re confusing oil with moisture

We can’t stress this enough: Oil is not moisture! Just the same way you wouldn’t drink olive oil if you were thirsty, don’t try and apply this to your parched hair. The proper steps for adequately moisturising hair are:

Water --> Water-based product --> Oil or Oil-based product to seal

4. Protein overload

You may have gotten into the habit of regular protein treatments when you were relaxed, but as a naturalista, these might not be strictly necessary. If you do decide to do a protein treatment, always, ALWAYS, follow up with a moisturising deep conditioner to restore balance.

5. Over-shampooing and under-conditioning

Not much to say on this: shampoos can be drying, and conditioners replenish lost moisture. We are generally team shampoo, but always pre-poo – coat hair qithan oil or conditioner first – stick to moisturising, sulphate-free shampoos, and alternate with co-washing if your hair and scalp aren’t too dirty.

6. Coconut Oil

Always a controversial one!

We are not waging a war against coconut oil. It smells delicious, it tastes delicious, it works great on our skin and SOME people love it in their hair. Here’s the skinny on coconut oil though: it helps hair hang on to protein. So if you are protein sensitive – usually people with fine strands – coconut oil can lead to protein overload and brittle hair.

7. You’re doing too much

We totally understand the temptation to experiment with every miracle hair treatment going, but we really do believe that when it comes to healthy hair, it’s best to keep it simple. If you do decide to try something new, research thoroughly first.

AN EXAMPLE: AYURVEDIC TREATMENTS

EXTREMELY beneficial to hair… IF you understand them!

Often, they are erroneously labelled as conditioning treatments, when in reality they detoxify. So should ALWAYS be followed with a deep conditioner. If you don’t understand this and skip this step? Yup – BRITTLE HAIR!

Don’t be a victim!
